Georgia Arbor Day

On February 19th, 2010, Georgia Arbor Day will be upon us!

.

Georgia Arbor Day is a state holiday that reminds us to reflect upon

the importance of trees in our state. The holiday gives everyone an opportunity to learn about trees, and the environmental, social, economic, and health benefits they provide to communities.

.

Trees Atlanta is going to celebrate Georgia Arbor Day in the seven neighborhood arboreta that are sprinkled throughout the city!

Oakhurst ~ Inman Park  ~ Midtown ~ Sylvan Hills ~ Reynoldstown

~ Cabbagetown ~ Virginia-Highlands

As you know, an arboretum is a collection of trees and other mostly woody plants that are cultivated for display, educational, and scientific purposes. Typically, an arboretum is located in a garden or park. A neighborhood arboretum is a little different because it is not in a garden or park. This kind of arboretum includes trees growing in yards, sidewalk planting strips, and neighborhood parks. Attractive granite markers are installed beside the trees selected or planted for the arboretum, to enlighten walkers about the names and unique characteristics of the beautiful trees that surround them.  Click here to learn more about Trees Atlanta's neighborhood arboreta.

On Friday February 19th and Saturday February 20th, seven tree projects will take place in the seven arboreta around Atlanta; these projects include tree planting, mulching, installing granite markers, and providing tree care. And when each project ends at 12 noon, participating volunteers can enjoy pizza at the Trees Atlanta Kendeda Center, where they are also welcome to browse the art from the Arbor Day Photography Show featuring work from Kathryn Kolb and David Knox
