The following is a summary of the various materials and systems used in the design of the new Trees Atlanta facility which are deemed as possessing sustainable qualities. This listing is in no way a comparison between "sustainable" and "non-sustainable" items. However, as a part to Smith Dalia's commitment to well-designed, efficient buildings, and in light of recent energy-related requirements by the state of Georgia, a number of these items would have been specified for a building of this type, which is considered to be above "industry-standard".

 

Building Systems & Components:

Site

• Special Soils - a planting demonstration site, sponsored by Bartlett Tree Experts, uses structured soils and Deep Root Silva Cells to show different methods and best practices for growing healthy trees in an urban environment;

• Pavers - porous surfaces allow for storm-water retention;

• Rainwater Collection System - tanks store the collected rainwater from the roof for watering trees as well as for flushing toilets;

• Concrete Paving - light concrete was used in the driveway instead of asphalt to provide a cooler site;

• Canopies/Awnings - sun shades and light boxes are used to reflect sunlight away from the building - minimizes heat island effect with use of reflective materials;

• Roof & Insulation - higher than required standard to conserve energy;

• Program Operations Building - a living green roof, sponsored by Home Depot, will provide three different planting options. Also, solar panels connect to a power grid to offset energy usage;

• Walk-off Mats - controls dust and debris from being brought into the building;

• Geothermal Heating and Cooling System - 25-35% energy savings;

• Exterior lighting to meet light pollution reduction criteria.

Building Iinterior

• Sun Tubes - in restrooms, hallways and board room to decrease necessity for electric lighting during daylight hours;

• Interior Courtyard - provides additional day-lighting for entire building as well as green space for meetings;

• High performance glass with higher Visible Light Transmittal rating;

• Concrete Countertops - made with recycled glass, locally;

• Building Insulation - higher than required standard - conserves energy;

• Bamboo Flooring;

• Sustainable Woods - certified by Forest Stewardship Council;

• Shower/Locker Room - to accommodate those who ride bicycles to work;

• Bicycle Program - loaner bicycles for staff and volunteer use for errands, lunch, etc. - will also be used for tree tours through neighborhood arboretum areas;

• Solar Water Heater;

• Operable Windows with Screens - to accommodate the use of fresh air for cooling;

• Non-toxic, Low-odor, Low VOC paint used throughout building;

• Recyclable Non-toxic Carpet - in board room and workstation areas, sponsored by Interface;

• Energy Star appliances;

• Florescent and Compact Florescent Lighting;

• Programmable thermostat for consistent heating and cooling;

• Donor Recognition Wall - reclaimed wood is being used.
