Speaker Series: Atlanta’s Canopy Update
This event has passed.
Join Trees Atlanta for a special evening presentation at the Trees Atlanta TreeHouse to learn how Atlanta’s canopy coverage has changed since the City’s 2008 benchmark study. Has your neighborhood seen significant tree loss or gain?
Contracted by the City of Atlanta, researchers at Georgia Tech have used satellite imagery to map where Atlanta’s trees are located, and identify potential planting locations and threatened forested land. Come learn about the implications of canopy loss for your neighborhood and how Atlanta’s residents can address tree loss and better advocate for the protection of our community’s trees.
Our speaker is Tony Giarrusso, Associate Director of the Center for Geographic Information Systems at Georgia Tech. His teaching, research, and consulting activities focus on GIS-based planning solutions for land conservation, public health, alternative energy, coastal and marine resources, and environmental protection. Over the past twelve years, Tony has been Principal Investigator or Co-Principal Investigator on more than 25 research projects. Apart from his research activities, Tony has been an instructor at Georgia Tech for the last eleven years, teaching introductory GIS courses at both the graduate and undergraduate level.
Thanks to City of Atlanta for sponsoring this event.
