Session 4: People and Place of Georgia & Atlanta’s Urban Forest
Instructor: Alfie Vick, Associate Professor in College of Environment & Design at UGA
Instructor: Brian Stone, Associate Professor City & Regional Planning at Georgia Tech

Alfie will lead an inquiry into the natural region of Georgia while discussing the historical importance of the area and the biological & cultural character of the Piedmont. He will discuss forest succession and forest structure to better understand how plants adapt to a changing landscape.  Alfie will highlight natural communities in Georgia with special emphasis on Piedmont species, biodiversity, and dominant trees.

Brian will discuss the state of Georgia’s forest, explain the concept of an urban forest, and reflect on how Atlanta’s tree canopy has changed over time. He will emphasize how the urban forest influences the built environment, in addition to the inverse set of associations (city — forest).
